The United Nations has begun distributing XO laptops to thousands of children in the Gaza Strip. The UN says that humanitarian conditions have worsened in the Gaza Strip in recent years, prompting efforts to improve education with the distribution of these laptops. The rugged notebooks have been manufactured by the One Laptop Per Child organization, with 2,100 circulated in the town of Rafah to the south of the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
It is hoped that the computers can improve education in developing countries by giving children access to educational tools and even the internet . Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the scheme, encountered a number of problems as he attempted to manufacture and distribute the computers as part of the aims of his non-profit organization. Original cost estimates proved unviable, while critics questioned whether portable PCs were necessary in developing countries where more essential resources are still lacking. The scheme has been successful, however, and aims to provide children in Gaza with 500,000 laptops by 2012.
The XO laptops offer similar functionality to netbooks, with simple word processing and internet connectivity available.
