Dell Pushing Tablet PCs Instead of Mini Laptops
Fri, 27 Aug 2010
Dell continues to exhibit a degree of disdain for the mini laptop market, and is instead prompting tablet PCs to its Asian customers. President of consumer, small and medium business at Dell, Steve Felice, conceded that netbook sales remain high, but voiced his expectation that sales of netbooks will begin to drop compared with the past two years.

Dell are confident that tablet PC sales will rise considerably in the next couple of years, and the US giant is expected to launch its 5-inch Streak tablet PC in Asian countries including China and India in early 2011. The tablet computer has already been on sale for nearly three months in the UK, and went on sale in the US this month, though Dell have yet to release sales figures.

Analysts have cited the greater profitability of tablet PCs as a potential reason for Dell’s decision to promote the touchscreen devices rather than mini notebooks . Though popular, netbook PCs have lower margins, making it difficult to achieve big profits in a hugely competitive market.

Dell is also busy promoting its new Aero smartphone across Asia. The company has already agreed a deal to sell the Aero through American mobile phone network AT&T, with the phone expected to be launched soon.
