Apple have been ranked as the third biggest laptop manufacturer in the world in an analysis by Deutsche Bank . Analyst Chris Whitemore included iPad sales as part of the figures, believing that consumers were now considering iPads and tablet PCs alongside netbooks and laptops .
During the last quarter, Apple sold 3.27 million laptops, but when iPad sales are added to those of Macbooks and Macbook Pros, Apple shipments reached more than 5.74 million. Having traditionally held a relatively small slice of the notebook market, the figures confirm that Apple are becoming a major player in the laptop market. Furthermore, whereas year on year growth for other PC manufacturers slowed, Apple experienced improved sales of Macbooks.
Significantly, by ranking Apple third, the US outfit rose above Dell, with only Acer and Hewlett Packard ahead of them. It is, however, a subject of debate as to whether tablet PCs and iPads should be factored into the sales figures of laptop manufacturers.
The PC market is undergoing considerable change at present, and with Android tablet PCs set to be launched by the end of 2010, there are sure to be further developments afoot.
