Record breaking sales of Microsoft Windows 7 has helped the software giant to post profits of £4.2 billion in just three months. Consumer response to the new operating system has been particularly strong, helping Microsoft to sell 60 million licenses, making Windows 7 the fastest selling operating system in history. Unsurprisingly, therefore, much of the profit was made in Microsoft’s operating systems division, which saw profits nearly double to £3.4 billion.
The success of Windows 7, which has been sold alongside new netbooks, laptops and desktops since its launch in October, illustrates Microsoft’s continued dominance on operating system software. Net Intelligence has released figures estimating that Microsoft holds a 92 per cent share of the market, with Apple and Linux holding a meagre 5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively.
While consumer demand for the operating system was strong, businesses were less enthusiastic, as illustrated by the 3 per cent dip in revenue of Microsoft’s business products unit. The frugal approach of businesses also contributed to a slowing in the growth of Microsoft’s server software division, which posted only a 2 per cent increase in turnover.
