The impending launch of the Apple iSlate has provoked anticipation and excitement amongst retailers and experts, as they speculate about the impact of the iSlate on the booming netbook market. The mini laptops have been a huge success in the past two years, offering mobile internet users the portability and affordability they crave. Indeed, during the past 12 months, netbooks have accounted for nearly one in three notebook sales, though experts have suggested that the iSlate could erode the netbook’s grip of the market.
The iSlate will have similar capabilities to netbooks, offering mobile broadband access, as well as video, music and media playback. Such are the similarities between the two, experts have said the pricing of the iSlate will be vital to determining its success. Others have pointed to the importance of the reaction among mobile broadband providers, with the potential inroads likely to be huge if broadband providers subsidise the Apple devices.
Speculation is rife as to exactly what will be unveiled by Apple in San Francisco on Wednesday, though one finance company has predicted that the iSlate could be worth $3 billion to Apple in its first 12 months.
