Laptop manufacturers have given another show of confidence in the mobile broadband market with the installation of 3G connectivity in many new laptops . Mobile broadband providers have invested in pushing laptop and broadband bundles whereby consumers receive a ‘free’ laptop if they sign up for a mobile broadband contract.
The standard 802 megahertz WiFi built into all notebooks will still be available, but the 3G cards in new laptops will mean that users won’t need a USB dongle to access the internet . The popularity of netbooks has signalled the importance of portability and affordability to the consumer, and the installation of 3G cards will help users to access the internet on the move.
Analysts are also speculating that there may be a new type of data streaming on the horizon which would allow laptop PC users to use general mobile broadband coverage to connect, rather than relying on WiFi. This would vastly improve the coverage they receive, giving a similar level of internet coverage to users of handheld devices such as iPhones and Blackberrys .
Existing ‘free’ laptop broadband bundles have had mixed reviews, with many pointing to the long term cost of the deal and the poor coverage as flaws in the deals.
