The world biggest contract laptop manufacturer has posted record high levels of shipments and revenue for a single month. Taiwan based Quanta Computer set the record numbers in June, suggesting that demand for laptops is not waning despite concerns about the impact of the economic downturn on the PC industry.
Quanta Computer, whose clients include the likes of Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Sony, shipped 4.8 million notebooks in June, taking in more than £2 billion in revenue. It is the latest in a series of strong months for Quanta, who set their previous monthly record in June, shipping 4.5 billion notebook PCs, bringing in more than £1.9 billion in revenue.
Quanta cited several factors in explaining the success, suggesting that consumers may have placed some orders a month earlier than would usually be expected, while the easing of some component shortages also helped. One such shortage has been the scarcity of Intel Arrandale laptop microprocessors, such as the Core i3 and i5, which allow PC manufacturers to create thinner laptops. Intel has upped production in an attempt to catch up with demand, and appears to have been at least partially successful.
