India Announces Ambitious Touch Screen Laptop Plans
Mon, 26 Jul 2010
The world’s cheapest touch screen laptop has been devised in India, with an anticipated cost of less than £20. The Sakshat PC has been developed by students at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology, though there remains one sizeable stumbling block to the touch screen computer being available to buy – a manufacturer must first be found. The notebooks functionality is more similar to the Apple iPad than to other laptops, allowing users to access the internet, view PDFs and perform video conference calls.

Though it is hardly believable that a touch screen PC could be produced so cheaply, India’s Human Resource Development Manager, Kapil Sibal, insists that the project is feasible. The Indian government is at the stage of inviting entrepreneurs and manufacturers to come up with proposals, and Sibal hopes that the prices of producing the PCs may be reduced to as little as £7 once economies of scale as factored in.

The Indian government has, however, set out ambitious plans to sell cheap laptops before – unsuccessfully. E-learning is seen as the most effective way to help raise standards of education in India, with most state-run schools unable to offer the adequate facilities.
