Amidst problems surrounding the launch of the iPhone 4, Apple have been dealt a boost with the news that they have increased their share of the US laptop market. The innovative PC maker enjoyed a 0.7 per cent increase in their market share, which rose from 9.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2009, to 9.8 per cent in the second quarter of this year.
The figures are made all the more impressive by the fact that technology research firm Gartner, who compiled the numbers, did not include Apple’s iPad in the study. Sales of the tablet PC have exceeded the forecasts of many analysts, prompting new predictions that the iPad could be about to revolutionise the PC market, eroding notebook sales and bridging the gap between mobile phones and laptops .
Meanwhile, though notebooks have surged in popularity in recent years, overshadowing desktop PCs in terms of sales, data analysts IDC have released figures suggesting that desktops outsold laptops during the second quarter owing to a rise in IT spending by the small business market. The figures contravene both recent history and analysts’ insights, completing a shaky quarter for the laptop market, compared to recent quarters at least.
