Sony has been ordered to ‘recall’ hundreds of thousands of its Vaio laptops amid concerns that the computers may overheat and burn users. The American Consumer Product Safety Commission ordered the recall after a series of overheating problems were reported, and though there are no reports of any users suffering burns, the move has been made as a precaution.
Sony has agreed that there is a problem, but denies that a recall has been ordered, instead insisting that the problem can be fixed with a software update. Sony announced that the problem affects more than half a million of its F and C series laptops sold since the start of the year. Of these notebooks, 260,000 are in the US, 120,000 are in South East Asia, 103,000 are in Europe and 52,000 are in Japan.
While Sony contest that this problem requires a recall, recalls have been commonplace in recent years. Sony have themselves been forced to conduct product recalls in the past due to concerns about PC batteries and wiring faults, while Hewlett Packard were forced into a recall in 2008.
