Tablet PC Popularity to Erode Laptop and Netbook Sales
Wed, 14 Jul 2010
The growing popularity of tablet PCs is set to erode sales of conventional PCs according to a new report from Barclays Capital . The report estimates that consumers will buy 15 million tablet computers this year, and predicts that the figure will almost double to 28 million next year.

Ben Reitzes, an analyst at Barclays Capital, predicts that the rapid growth in the popularity of tablet PCs will ‘canibalize’ sales of netbooks and low end netbooks, prompting Barclays to cut its PC sales forecasts by 2 per cent.

The figures are, however, informed by the success of the Apple iPad, and there are no guarantees that the tablet PCs produced by other PC manufacturers will mirror the success of the sleek device. There are, however, a vast number of PC makers getting involved in the tablet PC market, with Cisco the latest technology firm to announce it is to produce a tablet PC. As well as the conventional PC manufacturers who have confirmed their intentions to produce a tablet PC, the likes of RIM and Google are also rumoured to be working on plans for similar devices.
