A hostel chain has revealed that more than half of its guests carry laptops containing sensitive data and work documents. A survey from Generator Hostels has revealed that 54 per cent of travellers carry notebooks with sensitive information on them, citing a number of different reasons for taking their PCs with them.
Half of those who carry their computers with them do so because they are worried about their laptop being stolen if they leave it at home, while a third believe having their notebook PC with them is a useful travel tool as it allows them to keep in touch with family and friends.
The hostel chain has warned guests that they may be jeopardising the security of the data held on their laptops by using unsecured wireless networks, as the lack of security on the networks opens up the possibility of other users accessing the data without permission.
Managing director at Generator Hostels, Eric Van Dijk, warned travellers to only use secure WiFi networks at their accommodation, or to make use or nearby internet cafes that have recommended and safe networks.
