UK Failure to Enter Top 100 Broadband Cities Frustrates Laptop Users
Fri, 30 Jul 2010
None of the UK’s cities have made it into a list of the 100 cities with the fastest high speed broadband access in the world. The list was compiled by web technology firm Akamai, finding the South Korean city of Masan to boast the best broadband infrastructure of any city in the world. Indeed, a number of South Korean cities performed well in the study, a trend which Akamai’s director of market intelligence, David Belson, suggested was the result of population density and the presence of a proactive government who have provided funding for broadband deployment.

In light of that explanation, the British government can expect some strong criticism for failing to support the roll out of high speed broadband. Laptop and PC users in rural areas have particularly struggled to access high speed broadband, while business groups have criticised the government for hindering their growth by failing to facilitate online development. Targets for the deployment of high speed internet continue to be delayed by government ministers.

The study also exposed an interesting discrepancy between the figures provided by Ofcom and Akamai for the average broadband speed in the UK. Ofcom recorded connection speeds of 5.2Mb/s in May, though Akamai estimate it to be considerably lower at 3.8Mb/s.
