The next laptop made by the One Laptop Per Child foundation will feature multitouch technology, according to the scheme’s lead software engineer Chris Bell. The XO 1.75 is due to be launched next year and the new developments such as multitouch technology are expected to be a feature of future generations of the low cost computer as well.
The XO 1.75 will be based on Fedora Linux, featuring either a normal 8.9 inch LCD display or a touchscreen interface. The laptop will also be powered by an ARM processor, despite the open source Fedora operating system not yet capable of working with ARM processors.
Having devised the XO 3 tablet PC, this will not be the OLPC’s first foray into touchscreen technology, but the XO 1.75 is expected to become the first OLPC notebook which features the technology to be widely distributed. The XO 3 tablet is not expected to arrive until 2012, a year later than the XO 1.75, though both are expected to have a price point no higher than $100.
The use of touchscreen technology represents the latest departure from the OLPC’s original XO laptop, which has been adapted and improved for a variety of different audiences.
