Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer has announced forecasts that the company will surpass Hewlett Packard to become the world’s largest laptop seller by the end of 2010. Hewlett Packard has long since led global PC sales, though figures from 2010 so far suggest that Acer’s predictions may not be too far wide of the mark. Already the world’s second largest PC company, Acer enjoyed a very successful first quarter, selling 9.49 million laptops globally – 20,000 more than its closest rival Hewlett Packard.
Acer chairman JT Wang cited the company’s quick response to increased market demand as the main reason for Acer’s success, adding that the company was ready for the anticipated rise in demand for notebooks and netbooks when pupils return to school and college after the summer. Wang also revealed that the company has increased the price of its products for the first time in five years, but insisted that the price increases won’t harm demand.
Acer currently holds 18 per cent of the global PC market, and last year surpassed Dell to become the second largest computer manufacturer.
