Asus Making New Mini Laptop with Mobile Phone Dongle
Fri, 04 Jun 2010
Laptop manufacturer Asus is reported to be developing a new netbook which uses a mobile phone as a 3G and WiFi dongle . The surge in popularity of the mini laptops has seen a concomitant rise in the popularity of mobile broadband deals which rely on dongles to connect to the internet . Despite the advent of smartphones, and the broadening functionality of these mobile phones, however, no netbooks have been created as yet that allow connection via a mobile phone.

There have been instances where iPhone and Blackberry users have used their phones as a tethering device to access the internet, though the manufacturers of these devices have sought to block people from doing this under their existing tariffs.

Though the new netbook would represent a breakthrough, analysts expect that the only phones compatible will be uncompetitively priced, or largely restricted in their other functionality. Despite making smartphones in the past, Asus has opted to defer responsibility for designing and making the compatible phones to Israeli company Modu. Critics have also pointed out that the 3G connection may disappear when an incoming call is received.
