Hewlett Packard Launches Educational Laptop
Fri, 25 Jun 2010
Hewlett Packard has become the latest PC manufacturer to launch a laptop specifically designed for school children. The new durable HP Mini 100e primarily targets primary school children, following the lead of the One Laptop Per Child foundation, whose XO laptop inspired the likes of Dell and Intel to enter the educational laptops market.

The HP Mini 100e is roughly what you’d expect from a netbook of this kind. It features an Intel N455 Atom processor, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of DDR3 RAM and a 10 inch screen. Users can choose to have either Windows XP, Windows 7 Starter or SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 as their operating system, while the mini notebook also has an Ethernet port and the option for WiFi connectivity.

In addition to these regular features, however, the Mini 100e also has a near full size spill resistant keyboard, as well as an LED light which turns on when the user is online, allowing teachers to spot any pupils who are online during lessons. These features aren’t without their drawbacks, however, as the netbook weighs a hefty 3.2 pounds. The netbook will cost $299, and is expected to be available to educational institutions in July.
