Increase in Laptop Broadband Users in MENA Region Expected
Mon, 14 Jun 2010
A new report from Onda Analytics has suggested that the mobile broadband market in the Middle East and North Africa is set to expand rapidly in the coming years. The report forecasts that revenues of the mobile internet market will quadruple for this region by 2014, driven largely by growth in Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates . These countries are expected to account for more than 60 per cent of the mobile broadband revenue, despite representing just 40 per cent of the region’s population. Report author Tom Harden cited a desire by some operators to showcase advanced services in the region, as well as poor competition from fixed services, as the main reasons for the increase in these countries.

The region is expected to provide 20 million mobile broadband subscribers by 2014, largely owing to the increased prominence of laptops and netbooks in the region. As notebooks become more affordable, computers have become more common in households in the region, though the growth in handset based revenues is not expected to be as fast over the next four years. In recent years, there has been an annual increase of 30 per cent in the number of mobile broadband subscribers, up to 304 million.
