Laptop Users Suffering Slower Internet Speeds at Peak Times
Wed, 16 Jun 2010
A new study has revealed that broadband speeds can be significantly slower at peak times. Broadbandchoices.co.uk show that internet speeds can be as much as a third slower at peak times, with 8pm the likeliest time to suffer a dip in broadband performance. The study, which conducted 250,000 broadband speed tests over months, found that 8pm was the time when most desktop and laptop users were online, with speeds vulnerable to dipping by as much as a third to 4.7 megabytes, as compared with 7 megabytes at 2am, which was found to be the quickest time to go online.

The study assessed the average speed of all of major broadband providers at each hour of the day, and found the volume of broadband users to be the greatest cause of slow internet speeds. Traffic management policies, which seek to prevent heavy downloaders from harming the speeds of other users at peak times, may also be to blame for slow internet speeds, and may inhibit the performance of those trying to watch TV online or play games over the internet.

Heavy downloaders are likely to enjoy the service offered by BE broadband, which promises not to limit internet speeds at any time.
