Toshiba to Launch 3D Capable Laptop
Mon, 07 Jun 2010
Toshiba has announced that it is to launch a 3D capable laptop, becoming the first PC manufacturer to launch such a product. The Dynabook TX/98MBL will go on sale in Japan this summer, featuring a Blu-ray disc that has 3D capability. The ‘3D system’ is manufactured by graphics chip-maker Nvidia, and offers 3D graphics by combining a pair of active-shutter glasses and its GeForce graphics card using a plug-in transmitter which sends sync signals between the two pieces of hardware.

The glasses flicker 60 times a second, while the screen shows 120 images a second which alternative between the right and the left eye. The sophisticated glasses help to separate these images to the correct lens, giving views the illusion of depth in the picture.

The notebook has a 15.6 inch screen and an Intel Core i7-7400QM processor, and is expected to cost 250,000 Yen, or $2,745, when it goes on sale in Japan this summer. Toshiba plans to market the computer overseas as well but is yet to unveil the details of when this might happen.

Given the recent rise in popularity of cheaper devices such as netbooks, the Dynabook TX/98MBL represents a significant departure from this trend, but is sure to appeal to movie lovers around the world.
