Electronics manufacturer Toshiba has unveiled two new high capacity hard disk drives, both of which will fit into a laptop . The new 2.5 inch hard disk drives have capacities of 750GB and 1TB, and are the first mobile HDD platforms produced by Toshiba since its acquisition of Fujitsu’s HDD unit. The hard disk drives have functionality beyond laptops, targeting televisions and set top boxes as well as desktop computers and notebook PCs .
The new products follow Toshiba’s forecast of revenue growth from its HDD business. Figures supplied by market researcher iSuppli suggest that global revenue will hit $27.7 billion this year, representing an 18.4 per cent increase on the $23.4 billion revenue made last year. The migration from 3.5 inch HDDs to 2.5 inch equivalents has helped drive this growth, and is also expected to lead to cost reductions.
The positivity surrounding the HDD market is in stark contrast to the same time last year, when, due to the economic downturn, HDD revenue fell by 11.7 per cent. With the advent of these ultra-high capacity hard disk drives, Toshiba has paved the way for further improvements in the capability of notebooks .
