BT Investment to Boost Laptop Internet Speeds
Mon, 17 May 2010
Competition in the fibre-optic broadband market already appears to be intensifying, with BT announcing that it is to invest a further £1 billion in developing its fibre-optic broadband network. Virgin Media and BSkyB have already committed themselves to developing faster broadband using the fibre-optic technology, while BT boss Ian Livingston has said that BT aims to extend its fibre-optic internet to two-thirds of the UK population within five years – higher than the initial target of 40 per cent.

The announcement is good news for PC users across the country, whether working on desktop PCs at home or in an office, or using laptops and netbooks on the move. The investment has been made possible by BT’s financial performance over the past year. Having recorded a loss of £244 last year, the telecommunications giant posted a profit of £1 billion in the year ending 31st March.

The UK’s broadband infrastructure is in dire need of improvement, especially in light of the surge in popularity of handheld devices such as Blackberry’s and iPhones, while netbook PCs and iPads are also expected to place greater demands on the country’s WiFi and 3G networks. Indeed, a study by Webro reveals that the UK’s infrastructure lags behind rival European countries.
