Intel CEO Forecasts Strong Netbook Sales
Fri, 14 May 2010
The Chief Operating Officer of Intel, Paul Otellini, has predicted a continued growth in demand for netbooks . During a speech at Intel’s investor meeting in Santa Clara, California, Otellini predicted that netbook shipments would increase by at least 20 per cent this year, as PC shipments continue to rise.

Having initially been viewed as an auxiliary PC by most consumers, netbooks are increasingly being thought of as a computer in their own right, capable of replacing laptops and notebooks as a primary PC. Intel’s Atom processor is specifically manufactured for netbooks, and accounted for 20 per cent of Intel’s mobile PC processor shipments in the first three months of 2010 according to new figures from IDC .

According to iSuppli, netbook shipments are expected to grow by 30 per cent in 2010, with shipments expected to reach 34.5 million. The mini laptop PCs have proved particularly popular in Latin America, accounting for more than half of laptop purchases in the final quarter of 2009. Total PC shipments are also expected to increase in 2010, with a 25.5 per cent growth set to take the total number of shipments to 209.5 million units.
