Laptop Users Affected by Virgin Media Broadband Error
Fri, 07 May 2010
Some Virgin Media broadband users have been left without internet for over a week after the broadband provider accidently removed the cable modems of active subscribers. The internet service provider embarked on a clear out of unregistered cable modems, but accidentally removed those of a number of active subscribers, leaving hundreds of broadband and WiFi customers without access to the internet. The ‘system purge’ had been underway since February, and despite encountering very few problems in the first couple of months, last week’s faux-pas caused users with modems issued by NTL to be left without access to the internet.

The error has affected desktop and laptop PC users, though a Virgin Media spokesman insisted that most of the modems affected were no longer in use owing to their age. The spokesman blamed the error on an inability to determine whether any of the modems were active. The company, which has been trying to pioneer quicker broadband services using fibre optic cables in some areas, has urged affected customers to call their customer services centre to have their modem manually reconnected.
