Virgin Media Unveil New Fibre Optic Laptop Concept
Mon, 10 May 2010
Internet service provider Virgin Media has unveiled a new concept for a laptop with inbuilt fibre optic broadband technology. British designer Alice Davies is believed to have created the new notebook for Virgin Media, who have invested heavily in pioneering faster forms of broadband. The Virgin Media laptop is intended to be used as a teaching tool, and reportedly includes capabilities such as Bluetooth connectivity and, of course, WiFi connectivity.

Rather than having to connect to the internet via temperamental USB dongles, the Virgin Media laptop concept includes a built in Virgin Media mobile broadband dongle, and also features an integrated webcam. The laptops launch follows the unveiling of Virgin Media’s on demand digital TV service, which has a number of American dramas available, and is expected to form part of future laptop broadband bundle sales from Virgin Media. The portable computer can also be recharged wirelessly using a mounting deck.

Given the surge in popularity of netbooks in recent years, it may have been expected that Virgin Media would have explored a link up between their developing internet service and the mini laptops, though they instead appear to favour the more functional notebooks .
