A new
computer has been made which is tailored to the needs of technology novices. The
Broadband Computer Company has designed the Alex
laptop for people who are frustrated and confused by
PCs . More than £2.5 million has been invested in the project, which allows users to receive a laptop for £39.95 a month, with no up front fee. The monthly fee includes
telephone support, broadband access,
software updates,
anti-virus software and a 10GB storage allowance on the Broadband Computer Company’s servers.
The Alex
notebook PC has been designed to be very simple to use. Based on
Linux, the laptop has simplified
internet browsing,
email, image editing and office software. Access can also be remote, with subscribers receiving a
USB which includes user-encrypted data, allowing them to log on to any Alex laptop and access their
desktop . The company also plans to build an application store for Alex subscribers, allowing them to add more features and functions to their computer as they wish.
The concept of simplified
laptops is not a new one. Indeed, TV presenter Valerie Singleton launched the Simplicity laptop last year which was tailored to the needs of older people.
