Mini
laptop users will now be able to download applications to their
netbooks after
Intel launched their Intel AppUp Centre. Although only the beta version has been released so far, users will be able to log on to a
website and download a number of free applications, including Boxee, Newsy and Yoono
Desktop . The applications are reminiscent of those available to download on portable handheld devices and
mobile phones such a
Blackberry or an
iPhone .
Netbooks have soared in popularity over the past 24 months, and Renee James, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intel
software and services group, said that the new Intel AppUp centre will further enhance the mobile lifestyle of
netbook users. The application centre is expected to prove a success, as consumers have already demonstrated a preference for affordability and portability, with many neglecting
notebooks and desktop
PCs in favour of a smaller netbook
PC .
So far,
Acer,
Asus,
Dell and
Samsung have confirmed they will be cooperating with Intel on the project.
