Pixel Qi is set to release new replaceable
laptop screens for
notebook users in the coming months. The sun friendly
laptop PC specialist revealed on its blog that it will be launching DIY kits for owners of
laptops who want to replace their screen with a sunlight friendly Pixel Qi screen. Spokeswoman for the company, Mary Lou Jepsen, commented that the process of changing the screen was very simple, describing it as a 5 minute operation only slightly more difficult than changing a lightbulb.
Pixel Qi first tested the products with the
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) foundation – an experience which has inspired Jepsen and encouraged Pixel Qi to make their
computer screens more widely available. Girls in poor parts of Nigeria who received
notebooks or
netbooks as part of the OLPC scheme helped Pixel Qi to test the early products.
The sunlight friendly
laptop screens look set to have a far wider audience than beneficiaries of
charity schemes such as the OLPC. The screens are set to feature in Notion Ink’s Adam
tablet PC and e-reader device, which it is hoped will provide competition to the
Apple iPad .
