The upcoming
iPhone 5 could come equipped with an 8 megapixel
camera courtesy of
Sony, according to reports in the US.
Howard Stringer, president and CEO of Sony, is said to have leaked plans of the company supplying an 8 megapixel camera to
Apple for use in its fifth-generation
iPhone .
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Stringer said Sony’s 15 factories in Japan have been affected by the recent Tsunami and that shipments of sensors to Apple would be delayed.
However, Apple usually sources cameras for its
iOS devices from OmniVision, with both the 5-megapixel camera on the
iPhone 4 and the 3.2-megapixel device included in the
iPhone 3GS supplied by the California-based company.
It was also suggested in February that Omnivision may not be able to make 8 megapixel sensors in large enough volumes in time for the launch of the iPhone 5 and that Apple may instead turn to Sony, which produces 8MP cameras for its new
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and Neo
smartphones .
