HP Recalls More Faulty Laptop Batteries

June 13, 2011

More than 160,000 laptop batteries in the US have been recalled by Hewlett-Packard due to safety concerns.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), HP has voluntarily recalled 162,600 lithium ion batteries used in some HP and Compaq notebooks, sold between July 2007 and July 2008, that have the potential to overheat and rupture, "posing fire and burn hazards".

The move is in addition to the 70,000 batteries that were recalled by the company from across the globe in May 2009 and 54,000 in May 2010, all for the same reason. Since last year's recall, HP has received 40 reports of faulty batteries overheating or rupturing, causing seven burn injuries, one smoke inhalation injury and 36 incidents of property damage.

The full list of notebook models and batteries affected by the recall can be found on the both the HP and CPSC websites.
