iOS5 to integrate Twitter and not Facebook onto the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

June 27, 2011

Interestingly Apple has picked Twitter over Facebook as the social utility to include as standard in there latest iOS, iOS5. The latest iOS will be the latest operating system update for a range of iDevices, including the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

However, here at laptops.co.uk we were confused as to why Apple would not include the largest social networking platform on the planet? Apple must have already reaped huge benefits from Facebook’s iOS app, so why not integrate it?

Perhaps the reason is as basic as Apple and Facebook not being able to agree to terms. Yet this still did not make sense considering the average internet user spent 1 minute out of every 8 on Facebook, so why would Apple not want to make use of this?

However, perhaps the reason is slightly deeper then just a failure to reach an agreement. It could very well come down to the respective companies strategic objectives. Apple wishes to push users’ content to their devices where as Facebook wish to keep all their content on Facebook independent of a particular device .

Another interpretation of the decision to side with Twitter and not Facebook is down to exclusivity. Twitter users more of a broadcast model where people chose to subscribe to someone rather than join their network as a friend thus making Twitter far less exclusive than Twitter. The Twitter integration allows iOS5 users to provide location information and other tweeterable content available from Google Maps, Safari, YouTube and other apps.

Nonetheless, Apple’s goal is to ensure a great Apple experience rather than to look to Facebook benefits. However, in including Twitter, Apple have chosen their side. Nonetheless, numerous bloggers, journalists and even our team at laptops.co.uk believe Apple may need Facebook in the future. Trying to sideline the world’s biggest social network site is not going to be easy.

However, the integration of Twitter is just one new feature to be included out of over 200 to be seen on Apple's new iOS. In addition, there is even rumour that the new iOS could be accompanied by the new and updated iPhone 5 .
