Let us just keep it short and sweet Research in Motion's tablet machine could very well be
the iPad killer that the industry has been waiting for.
Unsuitably dubbed the
Playbook the new tablet from
Research in Motion certainly packs a rather large punch in a nifty and small 7inch screen and weighs just under 500g. This a complete 2.7inches smaller and 100g lighter than the
iPad 2.
The
BlackBerry Playbook may have a rather deceiving name, considering it is more of an executive's companion than a play thing. Nonetheless, it is certainly a great piece of hardware with a great screen, powerful speakers, a rather slick design and an innovative and feature-packed
operating system .
However, one of the main problems we noticed with the
Blackberry tablet is that it is heavily reliant upon being paired with a
BlackBerry phone . Nonetheless, updates are apparently imminent and the rather unstable performance of the tablet should improve. In addition, we should hopefully see a BlackBerry equivalent of the app store which would certainly boost sales.
In theory the hardware that is packed into this rather small, easy to handle and elegantly designed tablet should be incredibly fast. However, until Research in Motion streamline the rather variable and unstable performance the Playbook does not quite cut it. Furthermore, considering the rather limited app support and the Playbookâs reliance on being partnered with a BlackBerry
phone .
Until then the Playbook certainly does not seem like the David that the industry has been waiting for to kill the
iPad, Goliath. Nonetheless, it certainly does sell the executive package.
