March 31, 2011

Tablet PC buyers will have an even wider range of devices to choose from next week with the arrival of the new Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

The company has confirmed that its new Android–based tablet, which can transform into an ultra portable laptop with the help of a docking station, will go on sale in the UK next week (April 6) with a retail price tag of £379 for the Wi-FI-only 16GB version – undercutting the recently launched iPad 2 by £20.

The price will rise to £429 for the 32GB mode while those who want the docking station with integrated keyboard dock thrown in will have to fork out an additional £50.

Features of the Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ device include a 10.1-inch (1280x800 pixels) capacitive touchscreen, a 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1GB RAM, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth connectivity and two cameras – a 5-megapixel one on the rear and a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera for video calls.

It also comes with one year free cloud-based storage as well as a productivity suite called Polaris Office, while those who opt for the keyboard dock will also receive a trackpad, a mini HDMI connector, two USB ports and a SD card reader.
