Sales of Amazons
Kindle products soared last week as shoppers across the globe rushed to take advantage of the companys Black Friday sale.
The company said that sales of
Kindle products - the
Kindle,
Kindle Touch, Kindle Touch 3G and the
Kindle Fire - were the 'best ever" on Black Friday and four times greater than on the same day in 2010, with the new Kindle Fire the bestselling product on Amazon.com in the US.
"Even before the busy holiday shopping weekend, we'd already sold millions of the new Kindle family and Kindle Fire was the bestselling product across all of Amazon.com," Dave Limp,
Amazon Vice President, said.
"Black Friday was the best ever for the Kindle family - customers purchased four times as many Kindle devices as they did last Black Friday - and last year was a great year.
"In addition, we're seeing a lot of customers buying multiple Kindles - one for themselves and others as gifts - we expect this trend to continue on Cyber Monday and through the holiday shopping season."
The Kindle Fire was launched in the US at the end of September and has since remained the bestselling product across all of the Amazon Group.
Despite having a smaller screen than the
iPad (7-inch versus 9.7-inch) and fewer
apps available, the Amazon device is considered one of the most credible challengers to the
Apple tablet thanks to its attractive $199 retail price and access to more than 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, magazines, apps and
games .
Despite its success in the US, Amazon are yet to reveal a release date for the Kindle Fire in other markets such as the UK.
