Apple's dominance of the
tablet PC market in the UK will fall in the next year, according to new research by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
A survey by the company found that a total of 3.62 million Britons own
tablet devices, with
Apple accounting for nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of the market.
However, Apple's market share may suffer a significant drop as only half of potential
tablet owners intend on buying an
iPad, although this is still a lot more than the 6 per cent who plan on buying a
Samsung Galaxy Tab - the iPad's nearest rival.
Over a quarter (28 per cent) of respondents said they were undecided about which brand they were going to purchase, indicating that the UK tablet market is still up for grabs.
According to Kantar, worldwide tablet sales will total 63.3 million in 2011 - up 261 per cent from 2010 - with
Apple accounting for 73.4 per cent of the global market.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director for Kantar, explained that Apple's achievements in this sector are "clearly linked to its success in the
smartphone market", as "80 per cent of people who already own an
iPhone and plan to purchase a tablet intend to buy an
iPad".
