Most of the 3D laptops that we’ve reviewed have been well simply a gimmick. The Toshiba Satellite A665 is a 15.6inch gaming laptop that is packed with a Nvidia GeForce GTS 350M dedicated graphics card and is a high performance laptop graphics card. Furthermore, the laptop is packed with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB RAM but at a price of above £1000 is it really worth it?
The design of this gaming laptop isn’t like many of them , decorated with tribal stickers or glowing with luminous colours, this boasts a simple matte black finish and comes with an attractive chain pattern. In addition, the keyboard comes with a rather nice backlight and overall it looks rather classy.
The A665 features numerous ports such as a VGA port, HDMI port, an eSATA port that doubles up as a USB port, an Ethernet port, media card reader, four USB ports, a blu-ray rewriteable drive and audio jacks. Furthermore, for the specifications and range of ports that this laptop features it is rather light and slim at a weight of 2.9kg and 35mm at its thickest point which makes it quite manageable to move around if you need to.
The trackpad and keyboard are rather a great pair, large, responsive and comfortable to use.
The 3D magic is a result of Nvidia’s 3D vision kit that consists of a Nvidia IR emitter and 3D-glasses. The emitter plugs into your laptop via USB and communicates with your stereoscopic glasses to deliver the display. In addition, you can adjust the depth of the 3D effect by a dial on the back of the emitter.
When it comes to processing power the Intel Core i7-740QM which clocks at a speed of 1.73GHz and with a maximum of 2.93GHz if TurboBoost is enabled. This is backed up by 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. However, when it comes to battery life it fails miserable and only obtains a life of around well an hour.
Overall, the Toshiba Satellite A665 is a great 3D laptop that does come with a rather decent specification but the battery life is terrible. It may be expensive but it does offer a decent performance.
