Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB External Desktop Hard Disk Drive Review in Accessories

Archived

Laptops Thinks

A great back up solution as long as you don’t mind buying extra for additional features or won’t keep it constantly on as the drive runs rather hot

Expect to pay

Pros

The flexible design makes it easy to add more connections and features and it offers decent performance

Cons

USB2 comes as standard and other connection adapters cost extra.

Accessory Review

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB2 external desktop hard disk drive is the desktop version of the rather portable FreeAgent GoFlex Pro. However, both hard drives feature a USB2 connection but both support any other type of connection via snap-in adapters such as USB3 or FireWire. However, this will have to be added into your budget.

The 1TB version costs £75 which per GB costs £0.07 and is a rather a good deal. Furthermore, the GoFlex Pro Desk is compatible with a PC or Mac and sits rather neatly on your desk but seems to topple over in the vertical position and runs rather hot ensuring that you have to turn it off after a while.

The box includes the single USB2 adapter, but due to the hard drives design you can add support for other connection types such as USB3 or FireWire with the addition of the suitable adapter.

Furthermore, another great feature of these adapters is that they are interchangeable with any internal SATA hard drives even if they’re not Seagate manufactured.

The GoFlex Desk hard drives comes bundled with Memo Backup software which you can choose is installed or not. However, it is rather limited in its functionality and the user would most likely benefit from third party software.

The drive is preformatted in the NTFS and thus to be used with Windows computers but it can be formatted to HSF+ so it is compatible with a Mac.

The hard drive performs rather well with a writing speed of 27.8MB/s and a reading speed of 37.8MB/s which is above average. However, the drive did heat up although not dangerously warm still though it relies on passive cooling.

If you are looking for a large and decent hard drive then this is certainly a great choice mainly due to its flexible design and fast transfer and writing speeds.

Conclusion

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the desktop adaptation of the portable FreeAgent GoFlex Pro but they both share the same connection types for your external hard drive solutions.
