The Cupertino-based manufacturer has sent out invites to US press sites, confirming that a new product will be launched at an event in San Francisco on March 7.
The invite reads; “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” It was reportedly sent out in the middle of Mobile World Congress 2012, right as Eric Schmidt – chairman of rival Google – was preparing to give his keynote speech.
As with all upcoming Apple products, specification details of the iPad 3 have been kept secret, although rumours suggest it will feature an updated quad-core Apple A6 processor, a better high-resolution ‘Retina’ display, Siri voice recognition and 4G capabilities.
Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said that if true, the 4G connectivity – based on the LTE (long-term evolution) standard – will be the most significant of the new features, as it will differentiate it from most Android-based tablets and the hugely popular Kindle Fire .
The third-generation iPad tablet is expected to go on sale in the US over the coming weeks, and will hopefully arrive in the UK by the end of March/early April.
