Sales of tablets running on the Android operating system are to overtake those on iOS.
ABI Research, which studies laptop and tablet shipment trends, said the increasing purchasing power of Chinese people who favour the affordability of Android devices means that global sales would tip away from Apple and towards Google.
According to the research firm, sales of smaller tablets under seven inches are becoming increasingly popular among consumers in the far eastern economic hub – with buyers tending to prefer Samsung, Asus and other smaller manufacturers’ products in this range.
Jeff Orr, senior practice director at ABI, said: “It is inevitable that Android tablets will overtake iOS powered slates, though we see no single vendor challenging Apple’s dominance anytime soon.”
Another interesting trend seen by the data tracking firm was the rise in sales of the iPad mini, which it says will become the better selling iOS tablet in coming years because of its lower price tag and impressive branding.
ABI expects the smaller Apple product to overtake its larger cousin by June 2013.
