The popularity of smart devices is set to rocket in the coming years, it has been predicted.
According to a new report from Juniper Research – entitled Smart Wearable Devices: Fitness, Healthcare, Entertainment and Enterprise 2012-2017 – around 70 million of these products will be sold in 2017.
These include health and fitness gadgets, smart glasses and enterprise wearables, with offerings from Google, Microsoft and Apple likely to drive sales.
Nitin Bhas, author of the report, said: “The development of the smartphone/app store model has opened up new avenues for other segments within the market, such as the wearable device market.”
Mr Bhas explained developers have been able to combine an efficient method of software delivery with extra mobility, adding the integration of technologies into human life is being assisted by advances with regard to both an app-ecosystem and wearable devices.
The research showed wearable products of this kind should boast a market share of more than 80 per cent in the final forecast year 2017, with the health sector to be marginally larger than the fitness and sport field regarding retail value due to higher price points.
