Mobile phone users in certain areas of the UK will be able to recieve text messages regarding the development of emergency situations in their local area. This is part of a new government trial.
The Cabinet Office is working alongside EE, 02 and Vodafone to test the system which will update users with information regarding severe weather, industrial incidents and emergencies.
The trial will be tested on up to 50,000 mobile users in Yorkshire, Suffolk and Glasgow. The alerts will be marked as ‘test’ during the trial.
A similar system is used in the Netherlands, US and Australia were messages inform individuals to keep an eye out for cars suspected in kidnappings, stolen cars and wanted criminals.
