Flexible smartphone panels to be rolled out by LG Display

LG Display has announced that it intends to begin mass-production of its OLED panel for smartphones.
The state-of-the-art display is the world’s first flexible panel and follows in the footsteps of the company’s 55-inch OLED TV earlier in 2013.
Dr Sang Deog Yeo, executive vice-president and chief technology officer of LG Display, said: “Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year.”
He also added that the company intended to continue to develop the technology by expanding into tablets, wearable devices and automotive displays.
Not only is the the panel unique in its flexibility, it is also the world’s thinnest among mobile devices currently on the market and the world’s lightest, too – with a 6-inch screen weighing just 7.2g.
The research firm IHS Display Bank says this sector of the industry will experience huge growth over the next few years and is predicted to be worth around $1.5 billion (£930 million) by 2016.
LG Display says it intends to introduce rollable and flexible display panels in various sizes to “bring innovation to consumers’ daily lives”.
