Airport Extreme Base Station

What We Think

Only one USB port makes the Airport Extreme Base Station a choice for only the hardest of Apple fanboys.

Accessory Review

If you’ve ever been to an Apple store, you’ll know that the Apple Geniuses all recommend the Airport as the perfect wireless accompaniment to your iPhone, iPod touch or Apple TV. Is it anything special? Well, not really. It’s a standard wireless router – but with an Apple logo.

Only one USB port, like the Time Capsule – could be improved
To use it is very simple. Just connect your modem into the Airport Extreme Base Station and set up the router with the bundled software – Airport Utility. Once up and running, you can have up to 50 other devices connected to the web through the router. Simultaneous dual-band support means that you can have 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands running at the same time.

This means your devices can choose the most efficient band automatically without human interference.

The Airport Extreme Base Station comes with 1 USB port, meaning you can connect your printer to the Airport Extreme Base Station for wireless printing as well as your hard drives.

In the box

In the box, comes:

AirPort Extreme Base Station
CD with AirPort Utility (Mac and Windows), AirPort Disk Utility for Mac OS X and Windows, 802.11n Enabler for Mac OS X v10.4 and Bonjour for Windows
Power cord
Printed and electronic documentation

Guest networking

You can’t do it at the same time, mind. However, the best part of the Airport Extreme Base Station is guest networking. Quite simply, you can create a separate Wi-Fi network on the Airport Extreme Base Station for visitors or users with other privileges.

This means that people connected to wireless network X can (or can’t) see what those on wireless network Y can see. In practice, this means that visitors to your home or office can surf the net through your Airport Extreme Base Station without seeing your private network, printers or hard drive.

As you’d expect, the Airport Extreme Base Station is prepped to work with all Mac computers, iPads, iPods and Apple TV.

Thankfully, it also works with PCs – and can do it all at the same time.

Our Verdict

The Airport Extreme Base Station is a wireless router from Apple. Coming in the company’s trademark white, it offers simultaneous dual-band support with 802.11n Wi-Fi access for Mac computers, PCs and Wi-Fi devices.
