Apple breaks records with 3m new iPads sold at launch

Around three million fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini units were shifted by the technology giant in the first three days of their release, double the previous launch weekend record set by the third-generation iPad in March 2012.
The new flagship iPad features a 9.7-inch Retina display, a faster processor and ultrafast wireless performance, while the iPad mini packs all the functionality of the standard models into a smaller 7.9-inch casing.
Additional versions of both products that incorporate cellular data capabilities will be launched later this year.
Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, said: “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
Apple’s financial report for the fiscal quarter ending on September 29th 2012 showed that the company sold 14 million iPads during the three months, representing a 26 per cent year-on-year increase.
