X-Doria Defense Lux iPhone 6/6s Case Review

What we think

The X-Doria Defense Lux case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s is a highly durable, luxury case, which importantly, doesn’t cost a fortune. We think it looks excellent, the hinge feature is useful, and the fact it offers “Military-grade” protection gives us comfort our precious iPhone is safe from damage.

Design

I’m a big fan of how the X-Doria Defense Lux case looks, combining metal, plastic and rubber expertly to produce a fully functional, attractive phone case.

What makes this case different to most is the fact it separates out into different parts, by unclipping a tiny hinge and removing the machined aluminium exterior frame. This is done to make it easier to insert and remove your iPhone. The inclusion of metallic buttons also makes the phone case feel more high-end.

While the frame is made from aluminium, the inner layer is soft rubber, protecting your iPhone from touching the metal and absorbing impacts, while the backing is hard polycarbonate, which is impact-resistant.

There is then a “luxurious rear panel” in the words of X-Doria, which helps make the phone case look even more premium, through the addition of soft leather and croc skin looks.

The ports are fairly large, to ensure you can still plug in your Apple earphones and charging cable without issue, as well as preventing your speaker or microphone from being muffled. However, this can result in more dust gathering than with some cases which have smaller ports, and if you do not have Apple’s earphones you may find your own do not fit.

One good consideration was the cut-out for the silencer button, which not all iPhone cases have catered for in the past. You still have easy access to the button, without it being at risk of damage if you drop the phone.

It’s also pretty light for a case offering this much protection, weighing 40g, and while not the slimmest case, it’s not too bulky or uncomfortable to hold. The raised lip ensures it provides a little extra protection for the screen, too, although for total screen protection you should go for a phone case which has a flap on the front.

There is a wide range of colours to choose from, so you are more likely to find one that you like. The options are Brown Croc, Black Leather, Silver Carbon, Black Carbon, Purple Impression and Blue Impression, which was the one which I received. I really like the look of the Black Leather version, but still think the Blue Impression version is aesthetically pleasing.

Functionality

The Defense Lux offers very good protection, with X-Doria saying it has been successfully drop tested from 2m onto concrete.

I’m pleased (and relieved) to report that there has been no damage to my iPhone 6s, which is all I require the case to do essentially. This is in spite of my phone falling onto the floor, or my desk, on multiple occasions (I’m clumsy, okay?).

In addition to no broken glass – the major risk of dropping your phone – I haven’t noticed any scratches yet either, which is great. Some cases protect the phone against scratches brilliantly, but it can be annoying to find they show up so clearly on the case, so I was glad this wasn’t the case with the Defense Lux.

Unclipping the hinge at the bottom left of the case is straightforward, as you separate the aluminium exterior. Placing the phone in the interior part is also easy, and it fits very snug, giving me greater comfort the my iPhone is well-protected.

You then simply replace the aluminium exterior around the phone, and clip the hinge back into place, and you are good to go.

Price

On the official X-Doria website, the Defense Lux case costs $59.99 (around £45). This is substantially more than I would be willing to pay for a phone case, but thankfully it is cheaper from other retailers.

At the time of writing, Amazon sell the Defense Lux for between £17 and £25, depending on the colour option you choose, which is very good for the amount of protection this case provides to your precious iPhone 6/6s, as well as the fact that it still looks very good.

Conclusion

Overall I think the X-Doria Defense Lux case is definitely worth some serious consideration to protect your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s – I’m a very big fan of it.

Not only does it look and feel like a high-quality, premium case, but it provides excellent protection to your iPhone. Best of all, you can get it for less than £25 at the moment, which is not much more than basic, plastic cases that mainly serve to look nice but offer little protection.

Of course, for the most serious protection, you should instead look for the heavy-duty iPhone cases, which cover your entire screen, but these aren’t always very attractive, or conveniently sized, and the Defense Lux will still provide great protection.
