What we think
The Xqisit S20 Bluetooth speaker is excellent, with sound quality defying its low price and small size. With a beautiful design, one which makes it look like it would be much more expensive than it is, the XQ S20 is one of our favourite speakers.
I really love the sleek, expensive-looking design of the XQ S20. It’s incredibly simple yet incredibly stylish, with a minimal amount of buttons and ports, keeping the design nice and clean.
The front and back sides are black, with the speaker design just like a grill, and you have the option between a gold, black or silver aluminium wrapping around the edges.
A major selling point of this speaker is its small and convenient size, making it very portable. It is around the same size as a mobile phone, but thicker. Measuring 6.65 x 2.5 x 14.4 inches, and weighing just 262g, it can be a great speaker to take away on holiday with you, taking up very little space.
The power button and volume control are located on the top of the speaker, while the side has a 3.5mm port for an aux cord, a USB slot, and a micro USB slot to charge the speaker up. There is also a built-in microphone, allowing you to accept calls with the speaker. Thankfully you don’t even need to be right by the speaker, you can go hands-free, as I found it to pick up my voice rather well despite being some distance away.
- Brilliant design
- Long battery life
- Great sound quality
- Value for money
- Maximum volume feels limited
- Metal edges scratch easily
- Bluetooth 2.1
I was very pleased to find that turning on and pairing the XQ S20 to my phone’s Bluetooth was quick and straightforward, unlike a couple of other speakers I’ve tried out before.
I was seriously impressed by the sound quality of the XQ S20, which has 2 x 3 W HD stereo sound. For such a small, budget speaker, I fully expected the bass to be poor and the speaker to sound distorted when the volume gets turned up high.
This was not the case, however, as the sound was clear and sharp the entire time. The bass wasn’t the most powerful I’d heard, but it really was excellent throughout a range of songs.
However, I felt the maximum volume could have been a bit higher – despite setting my phone and the speaker to full volume, the speaker couldn’t play the music quite as loud as I hoped. It’s perfect for smaller events, but for really big parties you might be better off investing in a larger speaker that has more power.
Admittedly this speaker is basic, but the price reflects this. There are no fancy gimmicks and tricks, with the XQ S20 focusing purely on the sound and aesthetics.
The main add-on is the wrist strap that comes included in the box, allowing you to hang it either on your wrist, or anywhere else you so wish, which can be very convenient if you haven’t got a suitable place to put the speaker down on.
It was also pleasing to find that XQISIT include an aux cord in the box, which annoyingly isn’t that common for speakers. Although it is a short cable, it’s still better than nothing, especially as you can connect it to your laptop and play your music through the XQ S20 instead of the terrible laptop speakers.
Also included in the box was an equally short Micro USB cable, for you to connect to your laptop or computer and charge the speaker.
The XQ S20 has an integrated 2,500mAh Li-Ion battery, providing excellent battery life. It lasts for around 10 hours of playing time, which will definitely be enough for whatever event or activity you want to use your speaker at, unlike some other speakers I have used.
It takes around four hours to charge it fully, which isn’t as fast as I’d like, but it’s still not too bad. However, it was useful that the speaker arrived almost fully charged, so I didn’t have to wait before I could use it.
Although the XQ S20 has a moderately expensive price through the XQISIT store, it is available for considerably less from other retailers. Amazon sell the speaker for £24.99 at the time of writing, which is incredible value for money.
Looking at the speaker’s premium design, and listening to its impressive sound quality, my first impression was that it costs around £80, so to find out you can get it for considerably less is fantastic.
The XQISIT S20 Bluetooth speaker is exquisite. For the price it’s available at, the sound quality is outstanding, remaining clear when on full volume as well as having strong bass, and I love the smooth design.
There are no real faults with it, although given the choice I would prefer for the speaker to have a greater maximum volume.
If someone gave me £100 to buy a new speaker, I’d probably choose this one, even though it doesn’t even cost anywhere near that much. Most speakers available nowadays are Bluetooth-compatible, but it’s definitely a big bonus that this one is such a convenient size, making it very portable and perfect for travelling.
