More than half of Britons believe laptops will be replaced by tablet computers in the near future, according to new research.
A survey of over 1,900 internet users by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk revealed that 58 per cent thinklaptops will soon be out of fashion, with 44 per cent of those saying they will become obsolete within five years, 21 per cent within the next ten years and 16 per cent claiming it will take 20 years.
Asked whether or not they owned a laptop, more than two thirds (69 per cent) of respondents said yes, while 47 per cent of those also said they have a tablet PC .
Over a third (36 per cent) said they use their laptop on a daily basis day compared to a much higher 62 per cent of tablet PC owners.
Commenting on the findings, Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “It’s actually amazing to think how far technology has come in the last ten years. If you had suggested then that people though laptops would become obsolete, no-one would have believed you.”
“The rise of the iPad and other tablets does make it hard for laptops to compete in the same market.”
He added: “I’m not all that surprised to find out that people think laptops will become obsolete, however I doubt it will be as soon as within the next five years.”
“While tablet computers are great for doing the majority of things, I think a lot of people prefer to work on laptops and desktop computers .”
