X-Doria Defense Lux iPhone 7 Case Review

The X-Doria Defense Lux case for iPhone 7 is a remarkably strong and visually-pleasing case. It offers affordability and a large amount of functionality, protecting my precious iPhone as much as one could hope for.

Design

The different elements of the case fuse together wonderfully, with the metal, plastic and leather all combining to give a very sleek and smart finish. My first instinct when I saw the case was that it was expensive and well-designed.

    Pros

  • Very good protection
  • Nice, attractive design
  • Comfortable to hold

    Cons

  • No screen protection
  • Quite expensive

Much like the similar iPhone 6 and 6s version of the case, the Defense Lux separates out into different parts; by unclipping the small metal clasp the case opens, making it much easier to insert and remove my iPhone.

The outside edging is made from cool-looking aluminium, whereas the inner layer is soft rubber. This protects my iPhone much better, absorbing the impact of falls better and safer than if the case was only made of metal. The protection of the case is increased further by impact-resistant hard polycarbonate in the back of the case.

On top of this, the case then has a self-proclaimed “luxurious rear panel”. It’s hard to disagree with this assessment as the case combines soft leather in a very satisfying way, to add an extra level of luxury to this case.

It’s also reasonably light, despite the amount of protection it gives. My phone is still very comfortable to hold when using the case, and not too bulky, unlike some other highly-protective cases.

The cases are available in Black Carbon, Rose Gold, Black Leather and Blue Gold, of which my favourite is the Black Leather design. This one offers a brilliantly simplistic and minimal design, which really appeals to me.

Functionality

X-Doria says that the Defense Lux can survive a 2m fall onto concrete, and I can’t say that I’ve found reason to disagree with them.

In the tests that we have done, the Defense Lux performed very well, with no damage suffered to the phone. There was no broken glass, which is the major consideration when dropping your phone, but I am also yet to notice any scratches to either the phone or the case.

Putting your phone into the case is also fairly simple, with the hinge system used by the case being very easy to use, and provides a massive sense of security, as your phone fits tightly into the case, with no room for slipping out.

Price

On X-Doria’s website, the Defense Lux iPhone 7 case costs $49.99 (around £40). I wouldn’t describe this as being good value for money, in spite of how happy I am with the case’s performance. As precious as my fancy new Apple product is, I wouldn’t want to pay that much.

Luckily, it is available from other retailers at a much more reasonable price.Amazon currently sell the Defense Lux for around £25, which is very reasonable. This price is much better value for money, taking into account how nice it looks and the high level of protection that it gives.

Our verdict on the X-Doria Defense Lux

Overall I think the X-Doria Defense Lux case is certainly worth thinking about, particularly at the lower price offered by Amazon. It is more attractive than most other cases I have seen or used, and offers better protection too

If you’re desperate for the most protective phone case available, you should look for one that is more heavily protected, and these would usually come with full screen protection. These do however, tend to lack a design that comes close to the Defense Lux, so make sure that you decide which is your priority: protection or aesthetic. If you decide that these are equally important to you, then the Defense Lux is, in my opinion, the way to go.
