Windows’ latest operating system update – Windows 8.1 – is released today (October 17th).
It is hoping to improve on its predecessor by updating the Windows Store, offering a new version of Internet Explorer, bringing in a choice of tile sizes for users to pick from and the semi-reintroduction of the Start button.
Laptops will also be able to utilise Windows 8.1 to turn their device into a hotspot if it is wireless enabled – while tablet owners will benefit from this feature as well. Naturally, this renders third-party applications redundant.
Windows 8.1 will also be easier to use for consumers who are still using a mouse and keyboard, while new applications like a calculator, sound recorder and new features for the alarm are also likely to follow soon.
Microsoft’s executive vice-president of operating systems Terry Myerson said: “As I walk down the hallway in my office this week, I see a lot of smiles from people on the team who are excited about their hard work finally making it into customers’ hand.”
A third update to Windows Phone 8 has also been promised to customers in the near future.
